Order of operations matters
The vehicle is rinsed thoroughly first so loose grit comes off before anything makes contact with the paint. Skipping that step is the single fastest way to scratch a car while washing it.
Then we wash from the top down, so dirt runs away from panels that are already clean rather than back over them. Wheels, arches and the lower panels — the dirtiest parts of any vehicle — are handled separately so their grime never ends up on the bodywork.
The parts that get skipped
Door shuts, sills, the area around the fuel flap, the underside of the handles, the lip of the trunk. None of these show while you are driving and all of them are obvious the moment you open a door.
They are part of the wash. So are exterior glass and mirrors, done at the end so nothing runs back over them.
What a wash will not do
A hand wash cleans; it does not correct. Existing swirl marks, etching and paint defects are still there afterwards on genuinely clean paint. What a wash does do is stop making things worse, and give you an honest look at the condition of the finish.
