We rinse the vehicle first so loose grit comes off before anything touches the paint, then wash from the top down so dirt runs away from the panels already cleaned. Wheels and lower panels — the dirtiest parts of any car — are handled separately so their grime does not end up on the bodywork.
Door shuts, sills and the areas around the fuel flap and handles are easy to skip and obvious once missed, so they get cleaned as part of the wash. Glass and mirrors are finished last.
